I had to pick up an ammo box cache from Spring Creek Pass so I decided to break up the drive with a run up RGP. Started at the 30 mile campground and took off. Enjoyed the lead up toward Weminuche Pass through the pastoral valley with the Rio Grande winding through. Nearly missed the unmarked turnoff of the Opal Skyline trail leading up to the RGP massif. RGP's hulking mass seems to appear out of nowhere after steeply ascending through forest on Opal. Once I navigated some sparse deadfall and made it to treeline the willow bashing commenced. At the base of the summit climb after the willows the trail isn't completely obvious. I just went straight at the pyramid. Ascending the ridge slowed my progress considerably. It's a bit of a choose your own adventure through the talus with an intermittent trail. Summited in 2:32 and then got graupeled upon on descending from the summit. No electrical activity. I didn’t manage water well and went without during a long 7mi stretch from the summit block until the base of the Opal trail. After refilling at the trail junction I was able to open it up a bit for the last 5mi back to the campground.
