I was supposed to run the Oregon Cascades 100 today from Bend to Sisters. It was canceled because a large wildfire is encroaching on Sisters. Disappointed... but no race, no problem. Thoroughly wrecked now. I had a lot of surprises on this route today. Winds toward the summit were cranking around 50mph. It was so cold and I had trouble staying upright. But I discovered the hard way that I forgot to throw gloves and a wind layer in my race pack before leaving this morning; just had to grin and bear it. The views made the discomfort tolerable. The loose descent off South Sister toward Green Lake was pretty tough with the heavy tailwind. Fell forward a couple times.😵💫 Fortunately the trail past Green Lake had a short climb followed by a nice long flowy descent before the next turnoff. Then the trail devolved into an interpretive traverse through rock gardens followed by lava rock talus. Picked up the PCT and started to coast again but the gratuitous deadfall kept me humble. I ran out of water along there. The anticipated stream crossing was putting out grayish chocolate milk. Eventually hit another crossing 4 miles later. I wasn’t expecting the final boss climb from the Le Conte Crater to the South Sister turnoff. Reduced to power hiking much of that. Then a sweet old lady volunteering for the park service asked me where my trail permit was as I was finishing. Told her I didn’t know what she was talking about before rolling on by. I caught back up with her and apologized for my ignorance. More mileage and vert than expected. Another welcome surprise was a single digit AQI with bluebird skies. Yeehaw.
