I always start at the bottom of Nellie Creek where it meets Henson Creek. You could start up at the trailhead accesable by a 4x4 road.
I went out for a run in the San Juans and ended up going up and down Uncompahgre Peak. The total route from the bottom of the road is about 15.5 miles with 5000ft of elevation gain.
