Colorado, US

Description

Uncompahgre & Wetterhorn are two 14ers in the San Juan Range.  They are quite remote, and climbing them together is generally considered a long day - maybe 18 miles with 6400' of elevation gain.

We include here as a Variation Bill Briggs' "Lake City High Five":  Starting at the Uncompahgre trailhead (Nellie Creek) and finishing at the Handies trailhead (Grizzly Gulch), ascend Uncompahgre, Wetterhorn, Redcloud, Sunshine, and Handies Peaks. Open route.

Doing Uncompahgre only from the Owl Gulch TH is about 15.5 miles with 5000' of elevation gain. Note that there are Strava segments for the ascent and up & down from the Nellie Creek (4WD) TH.

Editor's Note: Many Colorado 14ers should not be considered “backcountry” where you go anywhere you want; their popularity can create a plethora of braided social paths that lasts for decades in the fragile tundra.  So if there is a trail, please stay on it. Hundreds of volunteers with the Fourteeners Initiative work hard to protect our mountain environment.
