This was the second attempt at this loop this spring for myself and Emily Brackelsberg. Our first attempt 3 weeks earlier was cut short due to too much snow and 50mph plus winds. Conditions were very good on this attempt. Our only variation from the planned route was summiting Lake Peak prior to City Creek Peak. This added ~1 mile and ~500' ascent.
Total moving time was just under 24 hours and the total time included an overnight bivy.
We carried packs with sleeping bags, stove, bivy, full rain gear, food, etc. We obtained water mostly from snowfields.
This is a very technical route with over 22 miles off trail. There were many miles of complete rock sections that ranged from large boulder hopping to scree fields.
The weather was very good with no rain, mild temperatures, and moderate to heavy wind on the ridgelines. Wind is a concern for this route. Even when light wind is in the forecast, the ridgelines will see moderate to strong winds.
There were snowfields enough to fill water bottles and lower streams flowing. In a couple of weeks water will be limited. The higher elevation OHV trails were still gated so there were no people on the trails and no traffic on the OHV trails.
The amount of loose, rocky terrain and off-trail travel makes this route much harder than we had imagined when putting it together.
