This route popped up on my radar a few years ago when some sicko decided it would be funny to turn this into an actual route. After running it, I completely understand why nobody else has gone after it. It was a true sufferfest. Not difficult by any means, just mentally taxing. The novelty of crossing the salt flats on foot wore off after about two to three hours of the straightest, flattest miles I've ever run.
I drove to the Knolls exit and left my vehicle there before catching a ride to Wendover with a buddy. We played some poker at the Peppermill, and once I lost all my cash, I figured it was time to start running back.
Leaving Wendover heading east, there are a few isolated industrial sites to keep your mind occupied. Once you pass the potash plant, though, it's essentially no man's land for the next 35 miles. Doing this route entirely in daylight would be brutal. The only shade on the whole route is the conveyor belt crossing over the road at the potash plant. I started around 4:30 pm and managed to get about three hours of daylight before dark. The stars were incredible, but those radio towers on the horizon were deceptively far away.
This was unsupported, with no resupply opportunities even if I had wanted them. I carried roughly 2L of fluids and a handful of gels.
Someone with enough gumption could definitely lower this time. They'd just need to be comfortable spending several hours running some of the most mind-numbing miles imaginable.
