I went back for a 3rd time to complete this fabulous loop, this time solo. It is a bit of a hidden gem: remote, wild, rugged, and slow. The 38mi route leads through the little-known Black Canyon Wilderness in the Ochoco National Forest in Central Oregon.
I started at the Boeing Field trailhead (interesting history: https://crookcountyhistorycenter.org/2021/01/incident-on-wolf-mountain) and went counter-clockwise. The day was good. I hit piles of snow higher up and in shady areas, but those sections were relatively short. Without GPS, however, it would have been impossible to follow the trail. Because of the lingering snow, there was plenty of water on the loop. The river crossings were easy, but I had to get wet once. I didn't see a single person, which is not unusual on this loop. There was plenty of fresh cougar scat, however.
