I've been wanting to make an attempt at this for a couple years now but the timing never seemed to work out. Decided to bring my gravel bike instead of road bike so I could take a gravel road for the bike portion. It is not the same route as the previous FKT but this is consistent with other "picnic" efforts, so long as the run portion does not vary. (see: Presidential Traverse picnic). Started the bike portion at midnight to maximize daylight for the run. The bike went well and was otherwise uneventful. Started the run just before 2:40am. I knew I was up on the previous fkt on the bike but was entirely unaware of where I was on the run until I was about 1/3rd of the way through. After descending Crawford Path I refilled my pack from a resupply bag I had stashed behind Crawford Depot. It was getting hot out at that point and I was sweating much more than I had anticipated. Put in a good effort up Avalon and A-Z before slowing way down on Twinway. I was paying so much attention to my foot placement that I neglected to look up in time to see the broken branch that stabbed me in the face. Got a couple nice scrapes and a blackeye. Finally made it to the summit of Lafayette and began the descent. I didn't really want to do this on a weekend due to the added foot traffic and it wasn't really a problem until Old Bridle Path. The groups of people were endless. Pushed hard up to Lonesome Lake once I saw I had a shot at sub-19. Made it back to the parking lot in 18:57:45. Great day overall.
