A blustery and cold spring day on the Wherryman’s Way!
Starting at Great Yarmouth train station my brother and I stepped out of the car to be greeted by a frigid northerly wind that brought tears to our eyes!
Despite the unseasonally cold weather, the early miles following the river Yare passed quickly and the conditions underfoot were good.
We made steady progress during the first two hours passing numerous windmills, grazing sheep with newborn lambs and enjoyed running under the big Norfolk skies, especially when the wind died down.
We timed the ferry crossing at Reedham to perfection and had a fantastic first 18 miles! The next 20 miles proved to be far more challenging with overgrown grass on the raised trails and 2-3 miles of flooding (knee deep in places) around Surlingham Marshes.
Despite the setbacks, the route is very picturesque and is predominantly trail with very few people. The route is well sign-posted and easy to follow but there is a council flood defence diversion and one error on the original GPX track (unless you want to swim!).
A fantastic day and a route that my brother and I would thoroughly recommend.
