I followed Ben Nephew's original 2019 route, starting/stopping at the middle of Fowler Beach circumnavigating the island in the counter clockwise direction. I started an hour below long tide on a sunny/windy day for optimal conditions. I fluctuated running through the rocks ("flatish" slabby sections, rock hopping sections, and broken talus features), through the seaweed or along the waters edge depending what seemed best for each area of the island. I used the VJ MAXX trail shoe which seemed prime for this type of terrain. Feeling grateful for not falling or twisting my ankles even though there were a few close calls. A faster runner than myself on a suicide mission could probably go sub 1:10 on this route. This route is super fun and challenging and costal running in Maine needs more attention! Get out and enjoy running the rocky coastline Maine has to offer.
