I started in the dark, and the first few miles were chill due to visibility. It was getting light as I reached the river crossing, and I decided just to take the plunge rather than cross the narrow tree, since it was frosty and slippery out. As the climb started the boulders were also covered in frost, so that slowed progress a bit. It was my first time up the waterfall route, and I think I spent more of the route on the boulders than necessary, although thankfully these weren’t covered in frost. Views started to get epic from there, and my pace became less focused. My route also wasn’t ideal. I took most of the ridge up and down Hinman, which I think is slower, but avoids the snow fields and glaciers. After about 20min on the summit I took a slightly different line back to the waterfall trail, which still wasn’t ideal. From there I descended well though. I think someone could take this route under 6hrs with a focused effort, in good conditions, and with a better line up high. I didn’t end up drinking any water, although I brought 1/2 liter and a filter with me. Had around 800 calories.
