Three of us started from Exford early saturday morning. I'd only previously recc'd the last 10 miles of the route from Porlock to Exford so the first 50 miles of the route would be new to me, although I had run plenty of miles on the SWCP previously. Lots of little nav errors had us walk around open exmoorland but we soon found the route again. This is a more remote and exposed route vs the east Exmoor round which is great for picking your own lines and gaining time. First stop off was Simonsbath where you can make use of the public loo's and taps for water. Then over to Pinkery pool and down to Parracombe. Great community shop and cafe here to use, brilliant cake and hot food to top up with. Then over to the Heddon Valley, the road is currently out due to flood damage so we required a small deveation from the route, this added rather than took away distance. Weather got a little wet and windy from here on in and one of our party started to suffer from a poor chest so once we made it to Lynmouth, they skipped the next leg to Porlock and made that journey by bus. We stocked up on food and pasties and headed off down the Lorna Doone valley towards Watersmeet and Rockford. Amazing riverside running here. Then it's a trek upto Countisbury point where we made a nav error and headed to the top. Avoid this and keep lower and to the left to pick up the path round to the lighthouse. This then picks up the road and back towards the SWCP. From here it should be as easy as following the path to Porlock weir, but be cafefull as there are many little off routes that look like they might be the right way vs the GPX, but if you just stick to following the acorn SWCP signs you'll be right on track. Another pit stop in Porlock weit at the pub and again in Porlock to pick up our friend and it was into the final 10 miles climbing back up onto the higher moor. The final descent into Exford is fun on tired legs but got it done and in a time of 15 hours and about 20 mins. This is an easily beatable time as this was a half recce half first known time round. I look forward to people giving this and the East Exmoor round a go.
