Almost 4 years ago I did my first FKT on completing Fox River trail. Great Western is another popular trail in “my backyard” which I run and ride a lot, but never did a whole thing. It was in my mind for pretty long time. Weather forecast for December 28 was perfect for running (warm winter day with clouds and steady temperature between 43F and 47F). So, I decided to give it a try. And do it as an unsupported run going from west to east (Sycamore to Villa Park).

I packed my running vest with about 2 liters of liquids (water and electrolytes), many gels (Maurten and Roctane), various chews, Power bar, and even an avocado/salami/cheese sandwich. My husband dropped me at Sycamore and then brought my car to Villa Park (he hiked back home for 23 miles).

I started running at 7:12 am when it was enough light (no need for head lamp). Trail was soft after the rain before, but not muddy. Noticeable side wind (SW while I was running ESE) during the first half of the run. I was trying to run relaxed, control my heart rate, drink and eat at regular intervals (every 2-3 miles). Very few people on the trail, I have counted 12 during the first 18 miles (West branch of the trail). “Connector” portion of the trail goes through the town of Saint Charles. I stopped at McDonalds (after 22.5 miles) to buy a cup of coffee, eat sandwich, and refill my water bottles. Portion of the connector goes on busy route 64 with no sidewalk, but shoulders are pretty wide (whizzing cars are mostly annoying, not a danger). The East branch is the soft crushed limestone trail again, but unlike the west one there are many road crossings with stop lights (and cars). Nevertheless, running was smooth, mile markers were “counting down” for me. Very few people on the trail, mostly walking. Before 1:30 PM I was in Villa Park. I did it, all by myself.
