It had been a while since Chris and I ran a FKT together. We were in the Hanksville area for slot canyoneering season and decided this would be fun. Our original goal was around 5 hours, but we pleasantly surprised ourselves when we saw that the visitor center was only .25 miles away and that we could hit sub-4:30. We were both going into this with sub prime fitness and we also started later than the morning than ideal as far as temperatures go. It’s called the Frying Pan for a reason! We were going to be supported by our friend Santi (so he could film stuff for our upcoming YouTube channel). He chased us a bit as we were dropping into Grand Gulch, but he didn’t make it around to the road where we were going to resupply on food/ water before the long crew-less stretch. We knew that we were going to cut it short on water but that we would be fine. Here there were a couple little up climbing moves with water. Both our legs were feeling pretty beat down around the 20 mile mark where we saw Santi again at the Chimney Rock trailhead. We had water poured on us, ate a gel, and moved onto the last canyon! I knew the water was not going to be too high despite recent snow because I had asked for beta from a park ranger the day prior. My stomach took a turn for the worst during the last quarter, but we made it back to the visitor center feeling content with the day. It goes way faster now that we are familiar with the route!!
