FKT: Erin Ton - Volcano Copiapó (Chile) - 2024-03-13

Volcan Copiapo is such a striking peak. It seems that it stands out from all angles around the Laguna Santa Rosa area. And the sediment colors are stunning! I set out for the FKT and was making decent time until I reached the gully. That is where things took a turn. I was struggling with the altitude and had a hard time breathing. It felt like something was sitting on my chest. The steep, loose terrain did not help my spirits. I was moving at a snail's pace. I wanted to turn around on multiple occasions. Alas, I stuck through it and was relieved to reach the summit. Descending the scree gully was the most fun part of the effort. By the time I returned to the wash, temps had noticeably increased.
