I started my adventure at 5:57 AM in Gries am Brenner, initially running with a headlamp in the dark. After climbing to Nösslachjoch, I followed the northern ridge of the Obernbergtal, mostly on small singletrails, except one easy 5m meters downclimbing passage at km 16.5 (Max UIAA I)
This passage is followed by a downhill segment approximately 1,000 vertical metres into the valley before climbing another 1,000 metres towards Portjoch. From there, I followed the Austrian–Italian border ridge towards Sattelberg, passing historic military fortifications along the way.
The route was (mentally) much more demanding than expected, because of countless short climbs.
I completed the route entirely alone, without pacers, outside assistance or support. All my food consisted of 15 energy gels that I had carried from the start. I did not purchase or receive any food during the attempt.
For water, I started with 4 full 0.5L flasks, but refilled from natural sources along the route: a spring used as a cattle watering point at approximately km 14.4, another stream around km 20 right after the 1000m downhill segment, then there are streams around km 24 and 25.9, and a final stream around km 41.3. There were no water sources along the long border ridge towards Sattelberg, so it is important to refill at the stream in the valley at least.
This was my first self-organised, unsupported ultra-distance mountain adventure, and despite the physical challenges, it was an incredible experience!
Early in the attempt, I accidentally missed a left turn because the entrance looked like a private driveway. I continued for approximately 200 metres before my watch alerted me that I was off course. I then turned around, returned to the junction and continued along the correct route. This added roughly 400m to my total distance, which is included in my elapsed time. The original GPS recording shows this short detour.
Note on the Strava activity: I started and stopped my tracking right from the train station in Gries so the strava activity is a bit longer
