In my humble opinion it is important to get to know a place and respect it before running a really hard effort. I've played around with several different routes on Atlantic Peak, and I finally felt like I had the mojo, fitness, and line to really give the mountain a hard push. It was 37 degrees at the Christina Lake Trailhead when I got started, which felt delightfully cool and crisp for mid-August in Wyoming. The trail to the base of Atlantic Peak is rather flat from an elevation gain perspective, but it is a classic Wind River Mountain trail littered with rocks and makes more for "endurance plyometrics" than running. I climbed well up to the summit and after 2 hours and 2 minutes of hard movement I enjoyed the view of the Red Desert and the rest of the Wind River Range for a moment. From the summit to the trailhead I did not look at the time on my watch again, and instead I decided to see if I could instinctively move fast enough. Descending did not go as smoothly, as I made two navigation errors that put me slightly off my intended route, and I had to assume behind schedule. I ran the remaining trail miles hard, and when I stopped my watch I was shocked to see I was only a mere 28 seconds faster than Aaron Robson's stellar time. Atlantic Peak really is the southern "book end" of the Wind River Range and I hope more people get the opportunity to enjoy it!
