This was the second time this week that I did the double Fimmvörðuháls. Great training for OCC in France in a few weeks.
The weather was fine but rather windy. Decided to hold back a little bit on the way out (2:48 to básar) compared to the previous outing (2:40). This left enough energy for me to push more on the way back and get a better overall time (05:38:54 compared with 05:56:47)
I met my friend Sigurður Kiernan around the highest point on the way out, he told me about a segment where he had the CR on the way back down. I decided I was going to go for that, so I did. I got the CR but not by much: https://www.strava.com/segments/13043739?filter=overall
I started the clock at the service center/toilets at Skógarfoss waterfall and stopped it again at the same location.
I turned around at the main cabin in Básar as shown on the photo on Strava. I had a 1L bladder with water and a 0,5 L softflask also. I filled the softflask in a creek in Básar. I ate some 2-3 GU gels and a Nakd energy bar which I carried in my pack. I also had a jacket, hat and gloves in the pack for safety, and I think this is absolutely necessary for this crossing as the weather can change very fast and the ridge is quite exposed in between the glaciers.
