I ran the route West to East, which I believe is the slower direction. Starting at Bowman Lake around 7:00 AM, I was able to complete most of the route in the daytime, and I would encourage anyone that is trying it to start before the sun comes up, or during a longer day of the year.
The climb up to Brown Pass is pretty overgrown, and I would recommend calf sleeves to protect the skin.
Goat Haunt Shelter and Waterton Lake was a huge highlight, and I ate a “lunch” there, taking a few minutes to swim and enjoy the scenery.
The second half of this route, up and down Stoney Indian Pass, and along Belly River seemed to stretch on interminably, but was able to keep moving, and eventually climbed the last 1000 ft to Chief Mountain trailhead.
Water was plentiful even in September and never carried more than a liter. The trails are well marked, and other than the beginning section from Bowman Lake to Brown Pass, the trails are well maintained and well marked.
I believe if I had a support vehicle at the other end of the route, and did not bring gear for camping, sub 12 is very possible.
