On September 4, 2020 I set the women's unsupported out/back effort on Mt. Sneffels, with a total elapsed time of 2hr 34min 5sec.
It was my second time climbing Sneffels, and my first time by way of the classic route. I had finished a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail less than a week prior, and climbed Sneffels for the first time ever via Blue Lakes Pass, scrambling up the Southwest Ridge, on September 1st.
The sun was shining, it was a beautiful day and there were plenty of people on the mountain. I hadn't intended to set an FKT necessarily, only to move quickly up a route I had never done before. Because of this, I paused to say hello to a few other hikers along my run, and I also took a break to enjoy the summit before descending. Looking at my track, it seems I took a longer than necessary return route down, I am not sure why.
Sneffels holds special meaning to me; the first time I stood on the summit, shaking and nervous from having scrambled up the southwest ridge, my now boyfriend told me how he really felt about me, luckily I felt the exact same! Otherwise that would have been an awkward descent.
Really cool mountain, really awesome day. Can't wait to get back out there and give it another (maybe faster) go!
