Broken Top is my favorite mountain in Central Oregon, largely due to how variable the terrain is. There is smooth gradual trail, steep rocky ridgeline, a brief section of 3rd/4th/5th class, and a heavenly 1000 foot descent of perfect cascade scree.

It is worth noting that Matt Palilla has the Strava crown for the Broken Top Roundtrip (https://www.strava.com/activities/1755086054/overview). On that effort however, he did not go to the true summit, skipping the final ~200 feet of technical (class 3+) terrain. Palilla’s splits via strava segments (both of which are crowns) are 1:15:15 for the ascent and 47:15 for the descent. I told myself beforehand that I wasn’t going to submit for the FKT unless my splits usurped Matt's. My ascent split to the base of the summit block (ie, directly in comparison to Matt) was 1:15:30. My descent from the base of the summit block was 45:15. However, it appears that I triggered the strava segments for both the ascent and descent *above* the base of the summit block (and slightly below the true summit) which “penalized” me by ~2min for both the ascent and descent segments. In direct comparison to Matt, my roundtrip effort (removing the 6min on the summit block) was slightly superior: 1:15:30/45:15/2:00:45 for me vs. 1:15:15/47:15/2:02:30 for Matt.
