The Assynt Traverse (46 Miles and 6,200 Meters of Ascent)
The Assynt region is home to one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Britain and includes some of its most illustrious peaks. Although modest in height by Scottish standards, they rise dramatically from the surrounding bleak tableland as giant monoliths of rock, both mesmerising and captivating.
The object of the route is a complete traverse of all its major peaks starting at Loch Lugainn below Stac Pollaidh and finishing at the Loch Glencoul viewpoint at Unapool near Kylescu. This involves climbing 12 peaks (3 on Quinag), covering some relentless terrain throughout.
This one has been on my bucket list for some time, but every year something just unfortunately got in the way. I was very surprised how well I recovered off the back of the Wainwright’s and everything just aligned to have a go, so after working in Skye last week, I drove further up north to have an attempt.
The day was amazing! It was very rough and tough, but I was super happy with the result. I managed to take 1 hour 10 mins off the previous record and finished in a time of 17 hours and 10 mins 😁 I also managed to complete the attempt Solo/ Unsupported, proving I can actually carry a bag on my back too 😂 (something I haven’t done much of for a while!)
After finishing the run, I then had to cycle back to my car, some 28 miles away, not ideal, but the only way. Such an awesome adventure, especially when waking up to rain the day after 🤟🏻
