This 34 mile bike path between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid opened last year and I knew I had to give it a go and try to set the fastest/first known time on the route. I hadn't step foot an inch on the trail before setting off. I came up to Lake Placid with my parents on Saturday, eyeing either a Sunday or Monday attempt. The weather was much more favorable on Monday as compared to Sunday. Monday morning was 50 degrees, a bit humid, light wind, and very overcast.
This FKT can be run in either direction, from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid or Lake Placid to Tupper Lake. I wanted to go from Lake Placid to Tupper Lake because it is net downhill, but the wind would be at my back going the other direction.
I broke up the route in three segments, TP train station to Floodwood Rd (8.5 miles), then to Route 30 in Lake Clear (9.5 miles), then to Route 86 in Saranac Lake. This broke up the route in 8-9 mile segments.
I ran supported, with my crew meeting me at each road crossing with my fluid and nutrition.
The lake views the entire time were amazing. Due to not many road crossings, the first half of the trail feel extremely remote. The paved section in Saranac Lake was a welcome relief after running on dirt the whole time. There is this 150 ft hill over three miles leading into Lake Placid that did my legs in and I gutted it out to the finish.
