I followed the route first posted and set by Steffen. The waterfall was a nice little detour at the beginning and chance to refill some water. I brought 3x 500ml soft flasks...two with filters. I refilled one of them here...then, as Steffen says, there's nowhere to refill until you're coming back down the other side of the ridge traverse. On a hot day, like it was for me, you need to be sure you have enough water. I budgeted mine pretty well thankfully.
The climb goes on for a long time and is really just putting your head down and pushing on until you get to the Vellacher Egel saddle. Then the highlight of the route starts with the ridge traverse. It begins not too technical or exposed but then as you climb up towards the Vellacher Egel peak it gets quite technical and exposed and continues like that for about 1km or so. Not for people who aren't confident with scrambling and exposure! The second half of the traverse to Spitzegel is easier going and not as exposed. But then going down from that peak is a bit of a scramble again and can get sketchy with the loose rock. That's probably the biggest danger...is just sliding if you're not surefooted.
After that technical descent, it's a pretty unremarkable run down on a forest service road. There's an alm where you can refill water and grab food if they're open. It was nice to open up the pace after doing 25min/km on the traverse!
Overall, I loved this route and it challenged a lot of different skills: steady climbing, exposed traverse and fast downhill running.
