Description

This is a spectacular and scenic but tough mountain tour over one of the highest peaks in the "Gailtaler Alpen" - the "Spitzegel". The round course starts at the "Pressegger See" (parking lots available, elevation: 560 m) with a short but steep side trip to the "Zuchen Wasserfälle" (beautiful water cascade, dead end). Back on the course a very long and steep uphill to "Vellacher Sattel" (elevation 1850 m) mainly through the woods on single tracks with some steep gravel road parts continues this logical round. From there, a very technical part in alpine terrain over the ridge between the Vellacher Egel (first summit; elevation 2108 m) and the Spitzegel (second summit, elevation 2119 m) takes your breath away because of the difficulties of the trail but also because of the spectacular panoramic views ranging from the Dolomites to the Hohen Tauern. The descent from the "Spitzegel" to the "Vellacher Alm" requires full concentration and some climbing. After passing the alp, gravel roads mix with nicely flowing single trails down to the "Kühnburg" and finally back to the "Pressegger See"

Good trail running or hiking gear is required and poles are recommended (if they can be stowed away - for some climbing parts you need free hands!). No water supplies on the uphill part - take at least 1.5 liters of water with you. You also need to have good heads for hights.
