The idea of running the entire length of this canal, the banks of which are regarded by most runners as rather monotonous and boring, had been in the back of my mind for a few years. An opportunity arose and I decided to go for it, but an appointment on Sunday afternoon meant I had to start at 3:00 AM in Amsterdam in order to catch the first ferry and be back in time for lunch. It was a cold, crisp night with a slight headwind. Perfect conditions, provided you protect your extremities.
I hadn’t previously scouted the route, relying instead on maps and aerial photography to chart the most logical and efficient path. In reality, I had to make a small detour at Driemond due to roadworks and the off-ramp of the Vleuten bridge was still under construction. The final bridge at Tiel offered no clear access to the cycle path, so I ended up sliding down a grassy slope. Despite these minor obstacles, the route is fine, and I see no reason to alter it in case anyone else wants to give it a try.
Like most of my long runs, I used my tried and tested 20 minute run, 5 minute fast walk strategy. I ran the fkt unsupported, meaning I brought my own water (2x500ml), 4 gels, a good headlamp and spare clothing. There aren't many options for refueling along the route, and given the time of day and the season they were all closed anyway.
