I’m not very focused on the time aspect of FKT’s, I typically don’t have a time in mind that I want to achieve. I can easily go 4-5 hours in the mountains without looking at my watch- a hand me down gps watch from my brother. However, I am interested in the competitive nature of FKT’s. Competition certainly isn’t the end all be all of being in the mountains but it’s also not a bad thing to want to be competitive. I was a hyper competitive kid growing up, to the point of tears in elementary school gym class or pick up basketball games at recesss. I was competitive in academic competitions, most areas of life competition was pervasive. I’m a competitive grownup kid these days and FKT’s are a great outlet for me.
I love being in the mountains, moving fast, but more often moving slow, just being out, and soaking up everything wilderness areas have to offer. Grateful for the Weminuche.
I knew the listed fkt (7:15) for wham wasn’t the true fkt. Having been in the Grenadier range-a number of summits in the area, and having done the approach from Molas before I knew I would need to be under five hours for a true fkt.
