Left the house around 5:45 am. The drive over was somewhat nostalgic from the days of driving the back roads to Eastern IL. Got started just past 7am. Used my Nathan 1.8 L pack. 3 Maurten gels, 3 salt tabs and a granola bar. Fluid pack had Maurten 160 in it. Not sure how much of it I drank. Trail consisted of rough single track in and out of ravines and inlets to Lake Shelbyville. Lots of little wooden bridges, most of which were dilapidated or even non existent. The Little Illini Trail section was even tougher. Mostly because navigation was really hard. Just a slow going trail in general. One little section (you can see on the gps) I had no idea where the trial was. Markers just disappeared. Thank goodness I was in navigation mode bc this route would’ve been nearly impossible or much slower at that if I didn’t navigate. A lot of times I just had to stop and scan for the white tree/post markers. A lot of times the trail just disappeared under the floor of leaves. I definitely think I came out at the right time. This trail would be a nightmare in the summertime. Didn’t see much wildlife, just deer and squirrels. Didn’t see a single person. Redbuds were poppin. Nonetheless I good day in the woods. Thankful to come out unscathed. Good training stimulus. Got done just as the rain rolled in.
