Report

This route is a variation of the Chimborazo Normal Route.

The ascent is completed via Castillo Ridge starting from Refugio Carrel (~4,800 m). From high camp (~5,300 m), the route transitions onto glacier terrain, following a direct upper line toward the summit. The ascent passes through Veintimilla summit (~6,230 m) and continues to Whymper summit (6,269 m).

The descent follows El Corredor, a more direct and continuous line back to Refugio Carrel. This creates a distinct variation compared to the standard route, combining a Castillo Ridge ascent with a Corredor descent.

This effort was completed on Chimborazo (6,269 m), Ecuador’s highest mountain, as part of a larger endurance project called “Más Allá”, aiming to summit Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, and Cayambe in a continuous push under 24 hours.

The Chimborazo ascent began at 2:00 AM from Refugio Carrel. Whymper summit was reached at 5:39 AM (GPS recorded ~6,279 m, device measurement), and the full round trip was completed at 6:43 AM, for a total time of 4h 43min 5s.

The effort was completed self-supported. All equipment and nutrition were carried by the athlete. No external support, resupply, or assistance was received during the effort.

For safety in glacier terrain, Reynaldo Camacho accompanied the effort as a guide, without providing any physical or logistical assistance.

After completing Chimborazo, the effort continued directly toward Cotopaxi and Cayambe, finishing all three summits in 20h 49min total.

This project also aims to raise awareness about chronic malnutrition and abandonment affecting elderly populations in Ecuador, supporting Fundación Juntos por Ecuador.
