Report

I started the NY Long Path on Friday July 7, 2023 at 5:45am from the northern terminus in John Thatcher State Park. 9 days and 10 hours later, I arrived at the southern terminus at the 175th St subway Station in NYC at 3:45pm on Monday July 17th. The effort was supported by a small army of friends and would not have been possible without their support. We faced every imaginable challenge for 226 miles: torrential downpours, 98% humidity, record-breaking heat, shoulder-high brush, shoe-sucking mud, knee-high stinging nettles, trail vandalism, sketchy country roads with no shoulders, thunderstorms, flooding and sleep deprivation. We had the police called on us. We were chased by a beaver. We followed fresh monster sized bear tracks. We were harassed by aggressive land owners. We shimmied across logs suspended over rapids not once, but twice. The crew kept me safe and moving forward throughout all of these challenges. The NY Long Path is one of the most diverse trails in the country and traverses some of the most iconic trails on the East Coast. For me, the best part of the Long Path was definitely the 90 miles through the Catskills. Devils Path was MAGIC. It was an incredible experience to traverse the Escarpment Trail, the Devils Path and the Burroughs Range. The trails north of the Escarpment Trail were exactly how each of the current FKT holders described: "wild". Covering these miles served as a great reminder as to how important volunteer work is. I have since learned that there are only 4 trail maintainers for the 100 miles from John Thatcher to the start of the Catskills. As we made our way south, we got word that there were major trail closures throughout Harriman State Park. Thanks to the efforts of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, we were given special permission from the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to pass through Harriman legally. These miles proved to be some of the most challenging miles that I have ever completed. Due to record-breaking rain and flooding, the trails were flooded, eroded, washed away and the normally slow moving streams turned into high water rapids. Without the support of my crew and pacers, I undoubtedly would not have made it through those miles. Completing the NY Long Path was a life-changing experience. The bonds and friendships that were forged on the Long Path and the inner strength that I found, far outweighs any record or recognition that may come from the effort. Thank you to the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, specifically Andy Garrison, for protecting and maintaining all 358 miles of the NY Long Path! And another thank you goes out to the current FKT holders who provided some great intel leading up to the effort: Ken Posner, Jeff Adams, Will Fortin and Dustin Smith. I hope that more women will get out there to complete and break this FKT!!
