Hiking the Allegheny Trail in the fall proved to be beautiful and challenging. The weather had range of 40°. The first few days of the hike the temperature was -17 below average. The trail was very well marked with the exception of the gap. I walked the route through the town of White Sulfur Springs since this is the official route until they are able to connect the gap. There is a communication blocked area that caused electronic devices to glitch. Thankfully, my Strava continued to work while I had trouble with my FarOut app. I chose to do this hike unsupported. I was able to carry all my food needed for two weeks. I chose to keep all the trash with me. With all the rain, water did not prove to be a problem. I used my Sawyer filter unless it was springwater.
I would go to every shelter during the day and sign the logbook. My tent sites were usually in the woods or on the edge of a town.
I will be sharing this hike on TikTok. I will do a day by day. I have already shared my photos and a video on Facebook.
I forgot to bring a spoon so I had to use my fingers. It would’ve also been nice to have a bright orange vest or hat since it was hunting season. Only saw one bear, but the dogs on the trail were a little concerning.
There were a couple high/low water bypasses. Thankfully I was able to take the official route. I did have to cross one river up to my inseam. There was no current and I could see the bottom clearly.
There were many blow downs along the way.
Overall, this was a very successful hike. I did end up losing 10 pounds.
