Had a fabulous day on the Emmons. I've found a lot of wind on the volcanos this spring so it was nice to not be totally blown off this climb!
Justin and I met at the White River Trailhead around 5a and got rolling by 5:30a. We cruised up 2.7 miles, dropped our runners and switched to skis and skins. We skinned up the inner glacier to Camp Sherman & roped up, and then continued up the hill. Switched to ski crampons and pretty quickly to boot crampons. Hit the summit before noon, ripped skins and got out of there! Nothing like that quad burn on firm snow up top!
We each carried 1.5 liters. I had Carbo pro + LMNT in my bottles plus a maurten gel each time we stopped (maybe 5-6 total). Once I tried a snickers but that didn't sit well. I've been "so serious about not being serious about nutrition in the mountains"- usually picking PB&J and candy over "tech food." I treated this event more like a bike race and I think it helped me to just eat easy fancy carbs.
Layering was easy- sun hoodie + light synthetic jacket. Neither of us got out our big puffy.
I think we could have probably saved weeeee bits of time here (we overshot our running shoes and ran around 5-10 min looking for them) and there but nothing big. Justin was super dialed and it was a great day!
