On Saturday April 2nd, I set the women's FKT on the Blue Hills Skyline Trail double out-and-back. After running the Skyline trail a few times this spring, I wanted to attempt the double skyline out-and-back as part of training for a few upcoming spring events. The Skyline Trail is an incredible training ground for Boston-based mountain runners as it packs a punch with elevation and technicality very close to the city.
I started on the east side at Shea Rink and used my car as an an aid station between the two out-and-backs. I finished the first out-and-back in around four hours and felt very strong and knew the FKT was within reach. I kept good pace on the second out-and-back, finishing in around 4hr10min.With very few stops throughout the day with only a five minute break at my car, I completed the double out-and-back in just under 8hr15min.
I carried 1L of water for each out-and-back. I hoped to fill my bottles at the headquarters, but the water fountain taps were shut off. I ate plenty of gels, waffles, and potato chips to keep me fueled throughout the day.
Saturday was an ideal weather day, but this led to a lot of traffic I had to dodge on trail. The trails were still a bit muddy from Thursday's rain, but overall conditions were great for this attempt.
I'm looking forward to seeing other women get involved on the FKT action for the double out-and-back!
Regional Editor Note: Liza's time was flagged because she only took the North and South Skylines in one direction. The double out & back route requires doing the North Skyline and South Skyline in both directions.
