I hiked from the Indian ocean at Tanga, Tanzania to the top of Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro, with Isaac Zakayo as my guide. I started at 12:24 pm on July 12, 2024. We hiked primarily along the highway until we reached the national park, but used trails whenever they were close and going roughly the same direction. I was fully supported with Isaac hiking with me, and a driver plus assistant to pick me up at the end of day and take me to a campsite or hotel. The support team also cooked breakfast and dinner. I carried water and snacks when hiking. We drank bottled water until we reached the park gate, then filtered water. I averaged 20 miles a day until reaching Marangu Gate at Kilimanjaro National Park. Once inside the national park, I hiked the Marangu Hut route for 3 days and then went to the summit at 1 am of the 4th day (night of 3rd day). I was at the summit by 7:40 am on July 27, finishing a few hours under 15 days. We had beautiful weather every day and I was delighted to finish a few days earlier than I expected. I believe I’m the first woman to complete this route.
