My girlfriend dropped me off at the start of the Hondsrug route. I found this route on the FKT site that seemed like a great start to the Nature Challenge (1000km in the month May), and who knows, maybe an FKT was in the cards.
The first half went well, averaging about 10 km/h. Perhaps a bit fast, but it felt good. It was still cool in the morning, which was nice. At km 40 there is a small loop around a fishing pond which is fenced now. At the entrance i was stopped and was being told I could not enter because it is a private area so i didn't do that loop.
I had 2.5 liters of fluids with me, which was generally fine. But because of the heat and some nausea, I would have preferred a bit more and maybe some cola. Fortunately, there was a water point (public tap see picture) in Zuidlaren where I refilled my bottles.
After 60 km, I decided to start walking more because I couldn't really keep any food in. I forced myself to eat the occasional piece of candy or energy gum, but I mostly survived on liquids.
I wasn’t going to beat the self-supported FKT anymore, but still ahead of schedule for the unsupported time. I might have to come back on a cooler day to try and break the self-supported record.
