My brother and I decided to establish and FKT for the Coal and Coke Trail in our dad's hometown. It was an unseasonably warm day for December 28, reaching over 60 F while we were running. Luckily it was cloudy for most of the run, but it was quite hot when the sun came out.
We walked to the Trailhead from where we were staying and saw a blue heron take off from the creek next to the parking lot, an auspicious sign for the run to come. We started on Route 31 in Mt. Pleasant. The beginning of the route was nice, running along Shupe Creek and through a swampy area. There was a scrap metal yard with large piles of scrap metal along the way in addition to a few cool bridges over streams.
As we got closer to Scottdale, the path had more asphalt and less gravel. We passed a cool log cabin and headed into Kendi Park, running to the trailhead at the parking lot there before turning around to complete the out and back run. After a quick shower, we grabbed a beer at Helltown Brewing to celebrate our first FKT!
