I was up very early to make the hour-plus drive from my home to the northern starting point of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, Janesville Segment. I completed this as an out-an-back, unsupported FKT.
I began around 6:16am, only a few minutes ahead of sunrise. I have competed this route multiple times, so I was already familiar with where the trail goes. I starting passing walkers, runners, dogs, and bikers pretty early and often, as it was a gorgeous day. I even passed some deer and a wild male turkey.
Running along the Rock River, through downtown Janesville, was nice. Passing the large hiker mural was a great sight. When I reached Riverside Park, I encountered the results of the recent heavy rains in the Rock River. I had to detour a couple hundred meters of the trail to avoid deep water. The rest of the park was in pretty good shape.
The Devil's Staircase and Arbor Ridge Segments were in great shape. There wasn't any mud or trail detours. I reached the end of the segment in great time.
The return trip was equally enjoyable, overall. The only issue I had was my left foot was cramping. I did spend time alternating between running and walking toward the end off the trip.
My hydration choice included Nuun Hydration. I had four GU Energy Labs gels and a Mamma Chia Cherry Love squeeze pack for fuel. I kept entertained during the 5 hours with multiple podcasts.
Overall, it wasn't very fast. I believe this will be run faster one day soon. So, get out there my fellow FKT friends and run this very enjoyable route!
