I went for a moderately hard effort on Emory Peak today to test my fitness as I'm in the middle of a training block for big mountain ultras this summer. Beautiful, but busy, day during spring break. The summit pinnacle was very crowded--a lot of people not knowing how to get up and down. Weather was great, 50 when I started and 73 when I finished. I ran into a Park Ranger horse train coming up the Pinnacles Trail when I was on my way down so that cost me some time. I'm also still nursing at least three running-related injuries so not my best day but still satisfied with the effort and enjoyed the run--the Chisos are among my favorite places to run anywhere.
For reference and future attempts, start and finish where the concrete ends and dirt begins at the Chisos Basin Trailhead snagging a photo with the benchmark on the top of Emory Peak (right pinnacle). Also, just fyi, the Pinnacles Trail was rerouted a in 2019? adding about 0.6 miles to the roundtrip distance. This isn't reflected on many of the Strava segments though I believe all the official FKT's are on the new trail.
This run was unsupported--I took one gel and one 18 oz handheld with Roctane mix.
My Garmin Fenix 7s recorded 9.99 miles with 2919 ft of elevation gain (Strava says 2573 ft which I think is closer to accurate) at an average elevation of 6517 ft.
