In 2021, I came to the town of Cachora with friends to do the Cachora - Machu Picchu route in two days.
At the beginning of the route, I slipped and got injured, so I had to stop and return to Cachora, and then head back to Lima.
Today, April 25th, 2025, I successfully completed the Cachora - Choquequirao - Cachora route.
I started at 5:33 am, carrying 3 liters of water, bars, gels, salts, creatine, and BCAAs. I also brought safety gear such as a headlamp with an extra battery, two thermal blankets, band-aids, and self-adhesive bandages.
I used trekking poles from the beginning. I had some trouble with the GPS on my watch, which at times didn’t show the route correctly, which is why I ended up doing 6 extra kilometers.
About the weather: it was cloudy and cool until I descended from Choquequirao, before crossing the bridge. Then the sun came out strong and was scorching. About 7 km from Cachora, it got cloudy and cool again.
Water and food: I bought water and a Coke in Santa Rosa, which is a bit more than a kilometer (if I’m not mistaken) after crossing the river.
Then in Marampata, I bought cooked rice and two pieces of bread.
Again in Santa Rosa, I bought water and a Coke.
From that point, I didn’t refill water until Capulliyoc, and then again in Cachora.
There are several points along the route where you can buy water and food.
The scenery is incredible—this route is totally worth it. I did it as part of my training and to finish what I started in 2021.
