The report from the current FKT owner Raphael Sarfati says that he chose to go up the gradual side and down the steep side, which makes a lot of sense. By accident I went the other way around, up the gradual and down the steep scramble. For obvious reasons, I wouldn't recommend this direction. It's certainly slower and tougher, and it means you do virtually all of the vert in the first 5 miles rather than spreading it out over 8 or so. Still a fun trail, especially the section between Lion's Head and Bear Mt. where you can really open up your stride and run some quicker miles.
