Friday night my partner and I were sitting there after dinner discussing our long run plan for Saturday. A thunderstorm had just passed through and a cold front with it. We'd talked about running the Oklahoma Panhandle and how we'd do it but at 6:41pm Friday I realized we had a weather window and convinced him to load the car now and goooo! We made the 4 hour drive out to the half way point and slept in the back of the car just off the road by the Anthony community sign. In the morning it was 32 degrees and we had pickled eggs, poptarts and coffee as we watched the sunrise over the desolate landscape we planned to run. We clipped our respective dry bags to the Anthony sign posts and I dropped him off at the Texas border sign with a car key and drove back to Kansas. I left the car by a shuttered fireworks stand and started my run south bound as he ran north. I shed my sweatshirt in 3 miles and tied it to a yellow reflective post near Ponderosa. I had the wind at my back, but it was forecast to change to the south anytime, so I focused on making good time at the start. I spotted my partner across the highway about 14miles in and gave him a wave as we kept running. I had 1500ml of water, 2 Gu's, a pack of fruit snacks and a rice crispy treat until reaching my cache at the half way. I guzzled more water and refilled my bottles, applied sunscreen and repacked more snacks. I ate another pack of poptarts as I walked away from the cache. The views were expansive and more beautiful than expected. Prairie dogs squeaked and played nearby as the wind continued to gust at my back. The shoulder was wide but passing cars graciously moved over and often gave me encouraging honks or waves. My partner finished his run in 6hr10min and drove to Texas to watch my finish. About 5miles from the end I notice a herd of 6 antelope running along side me in the fields between giant windmills. I crossed the shadow of the 'Welcome to Texas' sign as if it were a finish line. 7hours 52min 26second. Not bad for a Saturday long run.
