Since last fall, I’d been waiting for the right moment to attempt a solo, unsupported FKT around Île d’Orléans. That opportunity finally came yesterday, April 18, with melting snow and runnable roadsides.
It’s a beautiful looped course that looks straightforward on paper but can become challenging when the wind decides to get involved. Yesterday, I faced 35 km on the south shore of the island straight into sustained easterly winds and gusts. The north side came in the afternoon, with the heat.
Fully unsupported, no cheers along the way, just me myself and I, carrying everything I consumed from the start:
- 1.2 L of water + Upika
- 5 Precision chew bars
- few Ricola (long live the tail end of a cold and a dry cough).
Mission accomplished, satisfying: 5h11min.
