On Monday, March 1st, 2021 I ran the Massanutten Mountain Trail "The Ring" starting at Elizabeth Furnace. The run started great. The first half was faster than my last attempt. However, the recent storms left residual snow, ice, tons of standing water, downed trees, limbs, and debris on the trail. This made would be runnable sections completely not. The trail is already extremely technical, and all of this added another level of difficulty. The wind on one side of the ridge was absolutely brutal at night and made it feel way colder than the low of 25. My hands were frozen even with warmers. Also, the markers are hard to spot in the dark. I missed a couple of turns and had to go back. All of that being said, it was still a great day. My legs stayed under me and got me to the end. I saw 3 deer, one right on the trail eating, 4 hawks, and had a close encounter with a skunk. Luckily I didn't get sprayed!
