I thought Mark might have put this one out of my reach, but I wanted to take another shot at it and this morning's weather looked great--sunny and 30s, with a couple dry days since the last rain. This route has a lot of creek crossings and muddy spots, but it dries out pretty quickly in most places.
In the first few miles, I was working too hard to hold the pace and I thought it was a lost cause. But then I quit checking my watch for a while and just tried to enjoy the effort. I was surprised and pleased to see that the pace was taking care of itself. By mile 9 I was feeling pretty good about things--but then I spent nearly all my margin on the last big climb and ran scared to the finish. It looks like Mark added about a minute and a half with his wrong turn (I nearly missed that turn today as well), so I wanted to take at least 1:30 off his time. I took off 1:44, which isn't much of a margin, but I'll take it.
The trail isn't in the best shape I've seen--quite a few fallen trees and some unchecked erosion--but it's still generally runnable. I really like this loop and would love to see some more names on this FKT page!
