The Cabin John Trail is local to me, and I've had my eye on running the whole thing for a little while. Meg Landymore set a good time, but I thought I could better it. Initially, I'd planned to run the VHTRC’s Catherine’s Fat Ass 50k, but wildfire smoke from Canada led to such poor air quality in the MD/DC/VA area that the RD decided to postpone the run. Already having the day off and feeling ready for a hard effort, I thought, what the heck, today is the day to run the Cabin John Trail and go for the FKT. The way out went mostly smooth, took a couple of tumbles, but reached Goya Drive in 1:18. The way back started out ok, but this is where the heat, the humidity, and the poor air quality really caught up with me. The whole time I'd been thinking, the quicker you go the sooner you'll be out of this hot smoggy air. But in hindsight, I don't think that's always true. It's definitely not always smart. I knew that, barring total disaster, I had the time and it didn't seem reasonable to push on because I wasn't sure I wouldn't end up sprawled in the dirt, a tired dumb mess, before the trailhead on MacArthur Boulevard. I walked most of the little punchy ups the last few miles. Anyway, I believe there is still a lot of time to drop from this. Hope someone has a go at it.
