On Friday September 11th, Pier Pennoyer and Peter Howe traversed the Squam Range out and back in 4:12:42. Inspired by Ben Nephew's 2015 record, we ran the length of the ridge from the Cotton Mountain trailhead to Sandwich Notch Road and back. Style points to Ben for incorporating the ladders trail variation on Mt Morgan, which we used both directions. The only casualties of the day were the mortified hikers beneath us when we came down the ladders in our very short shorts.
The Squam Range mixes some of the most awkward, stride-breaking terrain with some of the flowiest ridge running in the Whites. Pier and I remarked at how finding a rhythm up there has taken us both years of getting to know the ins and outs of the ridge. After a few years duking it out in the Squam Ridge Race, it was pretty fun to fly across the home range together.
