Self-supported effort on the Cumbria Way (South to North). Equal parts beautiful & brutal at times. Set off from Ulverston just before 6am. Challenging to run the ‘flat’ sections in places as the surface was so rocky / uneven. Water refills at Coniston public toilets, the tap at Lanty Slee’s Cafe in the Langdales and in Keswick at the co-op with most of my fuelling through carb drink & gels. Seeing the sunrise & set in the same run was a first for me! Nearly threw the towel in on the climb up Grainsgill Beck to High Pike but realised there wasn’t really anywhere else to go and I wanted to bag my second wainwright (the other being Scafell Pike during a three peaks challenge 8 years ago!) Mentally a huge boost to see the downhill from there. Turned into a death march as the sunset approaching Dalston, offset slightly by the welcome relief to run the last 8km on hard paths. Finished at the Carlisle market cross at 11pm which for a Saturday night was eerily quiet! I was met by a friend waiting for me with a Tesco pasta pot & a ribena as everywhere had closed. No finisher line pint! All in all very proud of completing it and double my longest run ever. Would I do it again? Probably.
