I started at the Baxter Creek trailhead and ran clockwise. It was rainy and cold once I got to Mt. Sterling (couldn’t see any views) and for the first half across the ridge. The sun came out during the second half of the run. I carried all of my water (3 liters) after reading that there was a long section without any. Given the cooler temps, I only needed about 2.5 liters of it. I carried about 2,000 calories (uncrustables, fig newtons, gushers, gels, and tailwind).
I needed a fun long run and found this route on here. I loved exploring this section of the Smokies especially this time of year. I would go miles without seeing anyone and then would run into the occasional backpacker. I did pass a solo runner and a pair of runners who were going in the opposite direction of me. I hope more women give it a shot and I’m eager to run it again.
