I first attempted this route a couple of years ago but could not submit it because my device stopped recording 10 miles from the finish! So I'm pleased to have finally got another chance to give it a go. Its a fab route.
I dropped supplies in hedges in Over and Bisley and used a tap in Glasshouse to refill. I also bought some stuff in a store on the Stroud Road in Gloucester.
Started around 08:30. Humid 20 - 25°C with light rain am and sun with heavy rain bursts pm. Made some silly mistakes in the Forest where nav can be tricky and faffed with my bag and water for too long in Gloucester.
Long wet grass and nettles slowed me down in the fields which is normal for a summer attempt. Walked a little more than I'd prefer but conscious of saving my legs for an upcoming race.
I had also forgotten there's a fair amount of tarmac and wearing an old pair of battered trainers took its toll on my feet.
The forest felt charming in the damp morning rain, the wildflowers in the fields which have been left this year with their knapweed and wild carrot and the views over the Severn Vale were amazing and inspiring. Looking back at May hill from wence I came that morning from the top of the Cotswold hills was a reality check and confirmation of my tired legs. I slapped the stone marking the Thames River source on the way in and trundled into Kemble in time to get the 18:42 train. All done using public transport to minimise emissions. All rubbish taken home. The 2 miles walk home from the station felt longer than the whole 53 mile route.
It was a great day out in my hood! I'm glad to have been able to give it another go. Its crying out for a sub 9 hour attempt..... x
