Hi, I would like to submit this as an out and back unsupported FKT starting from the Matney Knob trailhead on the Sylamore Section of the Ozark Highlands Trail (Arkansas, USA) to the Spring Creek trailhead and back to Matney Knob trailhead- 63.2 miles. I started on 9/8/2024 around 0530 at the Matney Knob trailhead and finished back at the Matney Knob trailhead on 9/9/2024 around 2300. I recorded the event on my Garmin Instinct 2. I also had my Garmin Inreach Mini2 running if more proof is needed. I did the out and back unsupported, totally by myself. I carried all food and water. I filtered water from natural pools and streams. I picked a hard time of year to do this route. This is the off season for trail maintenance, so the trail was very grown up and hard to follow in some places. I got covered in burrs. I also got torn up by chiggers even though I treated clothing with permitherin and bare skin many times with picardin and deet. The trail was more technical than I expected, especially the last 8 miles or so to Spring Creek trailhead. I ended up doing this very technical part out and back in the dark. The water sources were sketchy at best, to be expected this time of year. I ended up filtering mostly from stagnant pools, which is not ideal in my opinion. Spring Creek was the only running water source. I didn't see any other hikers, which is no surprise, since this is pretty much the off season for hiking. I did see some black bear tracks in the mud, saw several deer and turkeys, and heard screech owls. It was a lot harder than I expected, thus the very slow time. The photo of Spring Creek trailhead is a photo of a video since I accidently took a video here. No surprise since I was already very tired at this point! Only a semi crazy person would try an out and back FKT in this part of the country this time of year. It should be easy to beat this FKT! I am just very thankful to be able to do an FKT on this challenging trail at my age of 66 years old. I hope this FKT motivates someone to do this out and back- but maybe wait until leaf off with cooler weather and more water available. Thank you for considering this FKT.
